Load-Testing of the Salu Bridge

PS “LNK Industries Group”, with the purpose of testing the actual load-carrying capacity of the Salu Bridge, performed field load tests of the bridge for three nights in a row. The bridge over the Daugava River and the bridge over the Mazā Daugava River were subject to load-testing. Special measuring equipment was installed on both bridges.

Nine trucks, each weighing 40 tons, were engaged in testing. The bridge was tested by applying both statistical and dynamic loads. Likewise, the bending and oscillations resulting from the loads was measured.

Initial testing results show that both bridges are in sound condition, yet the final conclusion will be released after the results of all tests are summarised.

The Salu Bridge was built between 1968 and 1976 and no major repairs have been done since that. The concrete railings, facade blocks and deck were worn, the pedestrian tunnel was no longer illuminated, nor were the deformation seams fulfilling their functions.

The renovation works on the Salu Bridge across the Daugava River and the Mazā Daugava River were performed by the general partnership "LNK Industries Group". The repairs started in the summer of 2014 and also continued during the winter period. In 2014, the financing required for the reconstruction project was EUR 4.4 million, while the completion of the project in 2015 and 2016 required financing of EUR 5.8 million and EUR 1.1 million respectively, including co-financing from the European Union Cohesion Fund of up to 85% of the project eligible costs. The reconstruction of the bridge has to be completed by the end of this year.
