The grand opening of the reconstructed berth of the Freeport of Ventspils

Extensive renovation of one of the oldest berths of the Freeport of Ventspils – so called “Winter port” – is now over. Reconstruction gave a modern look to both hydraulic structures and Freeport’s surroundings. The grand opening of the berth, that concluded another stage of Freeport of Ventspils infrastructure development, was held during Ventspils City Festival on 30th of July, presenting another renovated place as a gift to the city.

Freeport of Ventspils authority berth on 6 K.Valdemara Street is also called a Winter Port, Old Fishing Port and Wintrafen (from German – Winterhafen– Winter port). Possibly, this place was used as a shelter during winter in the state of The Livonian Order and Kurzemes and Zemgales dukedom times. At the end of the 19th century, there was a fishing port.  Nowadays this berth is used by Freeport of Ventspils Authority’s oil recovery vessels, depth survey boat Skauts, diving support vessel Neptūns, excursion ship Hercogs Jēkabs, as well as by the Latvian Coast Guard vessel.

Within the berth reconstruction project was performed a major repair of hydraulic structures, as well as decoration of port’s surroundings. Decoration features interesting shapes that symbolize sea waves. They are constructed using concrete sustaining walls with special texture, which are paved with granite blocks. A parking lot for 39 vehicles was built on surrounding territory. Reconstruction works were carried out by LNK INDUSTRIES GROUP general partnership.

“This reconstruction is one of the most unique reconstructions we have ever done. Evaluating construction process, I can conclude that we have reached a new level – high-quality implementation of complex hydraulic reconstruction and renovation projects. Available historical documentation about technical project of the berth, including hydraulic basic structures, did not always correspond with actual situation, so on several instances it was necessary to make minor changes in the project already during the construction process,” says Evgeny Lotsov, Member of the Board of LNK Industries JSC.

Total costs of the reconstruction project amount in 2.29 million euro, 85% of which were covered by the Cohesion Fund of the European Union. Reconstruction project of the Winter Port is a part of the EU Cohesion Fund co-funded project’s Nr.3DP/3.3.1.3.0/10/IPIA/SM/001 Freeport of Ventspils Infrastructure Development, which is implemented under the operational program Infrastructure and Services amendment 3.3.1.3. activity Development of Large Port Infrastructure within the Naval Routes.
