Discover the most modern study and research center in Latvia – House of Science of the University of Latvia

Academic Center of the University of Latvia (LU) in Torņakalns has successfully completed the construction of the House of Science, currently creating the newest and most modern study and research center in Latvia.

Construction was started in August, 2017, and finished in December, 2018. The total area of the building is 20 018 m2. There are eight floors and one underground floor. The author of the project is the architectural firm “Sestais stils”. General Contractor is “LNK Industries Group”.

There are eight LU structural units in the House of Science. Two faculties: Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Optometry. Six institutes: Institute of Cardiology and Regenerative Medicine, Institute of Physics, Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformatics, Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology, Institute for Mechanics of Materials, Institute of Astronomy. There are 78 scientific and research laboratories, 23 auditoriums, and special rooms with anti-vibration floor for accurate optical measurements are built in the basement for the needs of the LU laser center. The building can accommodate up to 2 000 students, with 450 job vacancies for scientific and academic staff.

The house of science was built according to the principles of a “smart” home with high energy efficiency.

The contribution of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) represents the major part of the costs of building and purchasing modern equipment at amount of EUR 36 million.
